Make your own Butterfly Face

make your own Butterfly Face

Join in with this project and use this natty piece of software that Dave has written to upload and 'butterfly' your own or a friend's face.

The software is easy to use and lets you see immediately, online, what your butterfly will look like.

To get the best results you need to provide us with a good quality image (see tips opposite). We also ask that you crop it to size (260 x 330pixels) so our servers don’t blow a gasket with huge files.

Taking the photo

  • Look directly at or slightly above the camera.
  • Point your head and shoulders straight on to the camera - ask the person taking the photo to look at the space between the sides of your eyes and the side of your face.
  • Make sure the lighting is equal on both sides of your face.
  • Stand against a plain background.
  • Keep your hair out of the way.
  • Relax and keep your expression neutral.
  • Stand about 1 metre back from the camera – this ensures you don’t get distorted features.
  • If you have optical zoom use this so that you get the head of the subject as large as possible in the frame.
  • Try one with and one without the flash. Sometimes the flash can soften hard lighting conditions to lessen bags under eyes and hard shadows under the nose and chin.

Preparing the photo for upload

  • Open up the photo in your image editing software and make sure your head is completely upright - imagine a line running vertically down and central between your eyes, and through your nose and lips. If it’s not, rotate the image accordingly.
  • Crop the image so your head fills an area of 260 pixels wide by 330 pixels deep.
