Blossoms and Butterflies

Celebrating the beauty and energy of life through the almond blossom which bursts into life in the middle of winter here in southern Spain. And with the blossom come the pollinators, represented by the butterfly wings. The butterfly wings and the rusty tin frame represent the passing of time, without this constant cycle of nature we wouldn’t have the blossom, the nuts, the caterpillar or the butterfly. Painted in acrylics onto Daler Rowney acrylic card, this piece has been layered with fabrics, embroidery, upcycled threads and real butterfly wings (found on our pathway, the butterfly already long gone). It has been mounted onto a rusted metal sheet and is ready to hang. Part of the ‘Pollinators for Tea’ series which celebrates all the tiny insects who pollinate our flowers and so put food on our tables. Bees are the most efficient pollinators, but even unexpected insects pollinate too, some that we even villify like the wasp. And others so specialised that without them some of our favourite flowers would die out - for example the range of specialist bees that pollinate wild orchids. These tiny insects need to be respected and protected for the important part they play in our lives and in the planets eco systems. How could we pollinate all our food crops without them? And how could we live in a world without flowers and these tiny, teeny workhorses?
